What
kind of music does Fat Shadows play?
Is it folk music? If it is, then it’s
folk music like you’ve never heard it before. So what is it
then, folk-rock? Well, let’s look a little closer.
First, there’s the songwriting of Robert Reynolds: a highly
original blend of biting political commentary, in the best tradition
of folk music, and the personal, tug-at-the-heartstrings yearning
quality of a great pop ballad – all in the same song!
Then there’s the rhythm. When the bottom, with John Rossi on drums and Shannon Weese on bass, is added to the brew,
the music takes on a rock feel that is dance friendly and captivating.
But wait! There’s more. What about that haunting quality that
makes this music stick in your head all day long? Where does that
come from? Back-up vocals, from Carole Laprise that’s where. Back-up vocals that
combine melody & harmony in ways that’ll melt your soul.
So does all this bring us any closer to a definition of this music?
Probably not. But who cares? Whatever you decide to call this heady
concoction that is Fat Shadows, it is an intoxicating musical potion,
indeed
